ICDSoft hosting service review - 3 years

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

ICDSoft web hosting service review3 Years ago, I knew nothing about Web-Hosting, or Domain Names.
But I wanted to start a website, and a couple people I knew online said they were with ICDSoft, and $5 a month for hosting and $5 a year for a domain sounded great, so I just went with them, I had no idea back then to compare hosts, and check into them.

Well, I sure lucked out by going with them. I feel very lucky I didn’t end up with some overselling, horrible host. Over the past 3 years, my experience with them has only been amazing.

Custom Control Panel: ICDSoft has a great custom control panel. I didn’t even realize it was custom for some time, since they were my first and only host for so long. Since then I’ve used CPanel, and its ok. But I just love their control panel. Very easy to use, and very easy to setup everything, emails, ftp accounts, subdomains, mysql, etc.
It’s very stable, and never messes up when doing things.

Support: They guarantee an hour response time, but over the past 3 years, every time I had a question, I got an answer within 20 minutes. And it was always very polite, and very helpful. Amazing, 10/10.

Features:It has all the usual features, PHP, CGI/Perl, MySQL, SSI, Web-Based Email, etc. It doesn’t have Fantastico, but that was never a problem for me. They do have a couple auto-install scripts, Form, Guestbook. I used the form alot.

Reliability/Uptime: Great reliability. Over 3 years, my site was pretty much always up. The rare times I’d see it go down for a few minutes, but I’m guessing the server was simply rebooting. Never had a problem with my site being offline. 10/10

Speed: Pretty good. Comparable to other sites. Some sites were faster, some were slower. I’d say an average speed. 7/10

Overall ICDSofthas been one amazing host. And I’ve always recommended them to others, and will continue to do so. If I recommend a host to someone, I want to know it won’t screw them over in anyway, and ICDSoft doesn’t.
10/10

But sadly early this month I had to leave ICDSoft. So this is sort of a farewell review, and after 3 amazing years with them I wanted to write them a positive review. My reason for leaving isn’t at all because of any lack of service on their part. I simply needed a couple things they didn’t have.

  1. I needed to start paying monthly, or every 3 or 4 months, they need a yearly payment.
  2. My site is starting to expand more, and I am going to expand it more rapidly the next few months, I just needed more gradual upgrade options, at ICDSoft you can only double, triple, etc your current plan (And double, triple, etc the price.)

I feel sad leaving ICDSoft, as they’ve been really good to me, but as I said above, I just needed a couple options they don’t have. But if anyone is fine with paying yearly, and wants a host that will not screw them over at all, then go with ICDSoft.

XeHost hosting service review by newbie

WeHost web hosting service review by newbieI signed up with XeHost last Saturday. The signup was ok, although they claim they verify your phone number. My phone was engaged when I signed up, so I thought it might affect the signup. I emailed them with no response. Turns out there was never any phone call anyway.

Everything with the actual hosting seems alright. They use RVSkin on cpanel - I prefer X2, but that’s personal preference.

The first time I tried to use Fantastico, it said that it was disabled. I went to the “24/7 live chat” to ask why. I waited about 15 minutes and never got to speak to anyone. When I went back again, it worked, so it must have just been a temporary problem.

I also need a CNAME change on my domain, which I can’t do from cpanel. I think they can do this. I went to live chat, but again after waiting 10 minutes I left. I then sent them an email. That was 36 hours ago, I’ve still yet to receive a reply or even acknowledgement. Summary: Avoid!

HostRefugee hosting service review by newbie

HostRefugee webhost service review by newbieI’ve been with lots of hosting companies in the past, even one that I’ve stayed for over a year but in the end they resorted to over-selling and giving so much space/bandwidth. That server loads are always 4-8 (out of 4), making my site so slow that it seems that it was off-line.

I thought all hope of finding a good host with no over-selling, secure, and a normal CPU load was gone, until I found Host Refugee.

I’ve been with them for a little over a month now. And so far the server load is great. It’s been always at an average server load. My site needs no more to worry about loading slow for my members. The server is very secure and the support is great at solving problems that I encounter with a professional attitude.

I hope to stay with Host Refugee as as long as my website continues throughout the years.

WireNine hosting service review - 2 months

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

WireNine web hosting service reviewI’ve been using WireNine for 2 months and found their service extremely superb compared to other companies, so I thought I’d share my experience with everyone.

I first visited Wirenine’s website expecting the typical: Ridiculous amounts of diskspace and bandwidth for less than a happy meal at McDonalds and pictures of computers and servers all over the place. So I surfed around and noticed that the every question asked in the WireNine forums was answered by a Wirenine employee - no not just a regular employee, but the CEO. How often does the CEO of a company come out and talk to its customers? After much consideration, I went for WireNine.

I paid $3.99 for the beginner’s package and got more than what I bargained for. Instead of being treated like a number, I felt like an actual customer at WireNine. Their support is so frickin’ fast that I never ever found myself asking, “When is this damn company going to answer.”… well… except once … Almost all of my tickets have been answered in less than 10-30 minutes. The staff are very friendly and patient and even gave me a few pieces of advice for my blog when all I paid for was webhosting.

Uptime is really good. The only time my site ever went down was when I got the “digg effect”, but they quickly took care of the problem when I contacted them.

The only complaint I have is (I had to think for this one lol) that I often edit my site at night, and the server backups tend to slow down the site a bit at around 2AM.

They’ve got great Cpanel Hosting and Reseller. I recommend you guys to give WireNine a shot. It’s pretty much a win-win. If you don’t like it, they’ve got a 60-day money back guarantee, but you probably won’t be needing that anyway!

Servage hosting service review by newbie

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Servage web hosting service reviewWell this is not so much a review but more like a comment about this webhost.

First of all I have only been with them for 7 days and so far simply put its been great. All my support tickets are answered very quickly (within 30 minutes of being posted). All there staff has been very kind and helpfull to me the entire time. Website visitors report decent speeds for file downloads as well.

There are only a few things I havent been happy with so far, and one is my upload speeds to there servers - I’m getting only half of my max speed with them where as with other webhosts I get max speed most of the time. Although I do go through 30 hops before my trace-route ends with them, I’m not sure if this is a problem on my end or theres.

I’m mainly using Servage as a file host for some of the files on my main website - so they have been great for me so far.

In short, if you want a host with a thousand features and thousands of pre-installed super duper scripts, look somewhere else.  If you need a host with lots of space, and lots of bandwidth, and you only want them for file hosting or simple websites, they are for you. I give them a big PLUS!

Startlogic VPS service review - 6 months

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

Startlogic VPS service reviewAfter 6 months with Startlogic resulting in our cancelling the account I thought I would share our experiences with them here.

We moved to a VPS with Startlogic due to previously poor service with Ipower in terms of support on our various shared accounts. So we decided to integrate all of our accounts on one VPS account. We spoke to Startlogic sales prior to the move and voiced our concerns based on our Ipower experiences, they passed us to their tech service manager and we were assured all would be different. Experience has proved otherwise.

Emailing support - waste of time as no response was the standard reply, following it up by phone and requesting an email update also a waste of time as no update arrives in your mailbox, causing further calls, further long periods on hold and continued frustration.

Calling support - anything up to an hour on hold, assuming it gets answered at all (regardless of department), once the call does go through it’s the usual inevitable response of it looks OK from here. Even providing a trace-route showing the point of failure doesn’t appear to change this Outlook.

Finally, I sent in an account cancellation following their process, received the autoresponse with a ticket number and the following day received a mail from renewal stating they had attempted to charge my card for renewal of the account, apart from the fact I had previously cancelled via their process we had repeatedly told whoever we spoke to that the account was not going to be renewed due to the substandard service we had received.

Overall I would say despite the fact their packages look attractive in terms of features avoid them like the plague. I doubt I could recommend any company less than these people.

As a side note, as we are all aware they claim to be totally separate from Ipower, trace-routes show routing and addressing still registered to Ipower, problems experienced by Startlogic are also experienced within Ipower … I would have to question the reality of the separation between the two entities…

HostGator hosting service review - 43 months

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

HostGator hosting service reviewI reluctantly closed out my reseller account with HostGator this evening. I have been with them for 43 months. The services and support were excellent during that time. They treated me most fairly. Whenever they increased the resource on packages for new customers, they did the same for the existing customers without charge. During the entire time, they never increased the fee even though the available resources at least doubled. It is also one of the few large companies where the buck stops with the owner. If something is not resolved correctly, Gator Brent will look at the problem and come to a fair resolution.

I purchased a self-managed dedicated server and I would still be with them. I hope to do business well with them again.
